Hippo

Hippo are large, powerfully built Awakened resembling hippopotami. They typically have
hairless gray or brownish hides, blunt snouts, and prominent lower canines that look like short
tusks. Hippo hail originally from warm riverine areas – swamps, great rivers, and lakes – and in
some worlds they are known as “giff” (particularly when involved in militaristic societies). In
Zoontalis, hippo often organize into mercenary companies or serve as formidable guardians.
They are known for an unusual mix of demeanor: in calm times, hippo are jovial, love hearty
meals and loud laughter; but when angered or in battle, they become ferocious and relentless.
They have a natural affinity for loud noises (thunder, explosions) and many become fond of
firearms or alchemical explosives if such exist – though in a typical fantasy setting, this may
translate to a love of big crossbows or siege weaponry. Hippo culture values martial skill,
camaraderie, and bold action. Many follow a patron deity of war or fire, believing themselves
blessed with explosive strength. Despite their warlike tendencies, hippo can be honorable and
are often reliable once they’ve given their loyalty.

Hippo Traits. Your hippo character has the following species traits:

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score
increases by 1.

Age. Hippo reach adulthood by 15 and live around 70 years on average. Some exceptionally
hardy individuals might reach 90, but constant brawling or hazardous work means many
don’t reach old age.

Alignment. Hippo tend toward lawful neutral or lawful evil in structured mercenary
companies, or neutral if living independently. They respect hierarchy and discipline
when in a martial setting, but they also have a streak of brash independence. Their
personal honor codes can vary, but many will stick to agreements (a hippo mercenary,
once paid, will get the job done).

Size. Hippo are very large Medium humanoids. They typically stand 6 to 7 feet tall and are
extremely bulky, often weighing 300–500 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and
the weight you can push, drag, or lift (your immense bulk grants you great strength).
Hold Breath. You can hold your breath for up to 10 minutes at a time. (Hippo are
semi-aquatic and can remain underwater for extended periods, though they cannot
breathe water.)

Natural Weapons (Bite). Your broad maw can deliver a crushing bite. You can make an
unarmed strike with your bite; on a hit, it deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier piercing
damage.

Siege Breaker. You have advantage on Strength checks made to break objects (such as doors
and wooden structures). Additionally, your melee attacks deal double damage to objects
and structures. (Hippo channel tremendous force when they slam into things, making
them effective at smashing barriers.)

Steadfast. You have advantage on saving throws against being knocked prone or pushed
against your will. Your low center of gravity and mass make you very hard to topple or
shove.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Beast Speech.
