Fox (Kitsune)
Fox (often called Kitsune) are cunning and mystical. These fox-like Awakened are known for
their playful mischief and innate magical talents. Having nearly been exterminated in ancient
times, kitsune are a resilient people who often live on the fringes of society. They possess an
aura of mystery, sometimes serving as tricksters or wise guides. Kitsune culture values
cleverness and subtlety; many kitsune honor a minor trickster deity who, according to legend,
gifted them with their shape-shifting ability as a divine boon. Despite their penchant for pranks,
kitsune can be fiercely loyal to those they trust.

Fox Traits. Your fox character has the following species traits:

Ability Score Increase.

Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score
increases by 1.

Age.

Kitsune mature by around 16 and can live about 150 years, though their appearance
ages slowly after their early twenties.

Alignment.

Kitsune tend toward chaotic alignments due to their mischievous nature. They
can be good or evil, but even the disciplined among them feel a pull toward trickery.

Size.

Kitsune are lithe and on the smaller side of medium humanoids, standing between
about 4 and 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed.

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. If your hands are free, you can drop to all fours
and increase your speed to 35 feet.

Kitsune Awareness.

You have an innate ability to sense falsehood. You know when you hear
a creature tell a deliberate lie (though you don’t learn the truth, only that it was a lie).
Any magic that shields a creature’s mind or truth will thwart this sense.
Kitsune Illusion. You can magically assume a convincing human guise. As an action, you
create an illusory human form for yourself that lasts until dispelled. This works like the
disguise self spell except it is not limited by duration – it lasts indefinitely until you
choose to end it or until it is dispelled. You cannot change this illusory form once chosen.
A creature that inspects you closely can make an Intelligence (Investigation) check (DC =
10 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus) to discern that you are not what
you appear, though they still cannot see your true fox form. If the illusion is dispelled
(such as by dispel magic or an antimagic field), you can’t use it again until you finish a
long rest.

Languages.

You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice
(many kitsune learn the languages of spirits, such as Sylvan or Celestial).
